Who Cares About Manufacturing With Natural, Pure, Certified Organic Cotton Fabrics In Australia?

These days, the term “organic” is often used as marketing hype, encouraging people to buy products that might well be organic, but the question is, have they been interfered with on the way to being processed, stored, displayed and shipped to their destination? Some products are sprayed with chemicals or washed in optical brighteners to make them more visually appealing to consumers,  others are wrapped in toxic plastic bags, even the ink used to print the labels is potentially harmful to people who are prone to chemical sensitivities, lethargy and allergies.

How One Man Got Relief From The Effects Of Chemicals And Improved His Health

Organature’s founder, Peter Byl has spent more than 18 years researching ways to alleviate the symptoms of the chronic and increasingly common disability known as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). When he was first diagnosed with this debilitating affliction there was very little known and even less help available for these people, and it became his mission during the years of enforced isolation to learn all he could to improve not only his own life style but also that of others enduring the same allergic and sensitivity difficulties.

Peter read numerous books (after they had been “off-gassed” outside for days and sometimes weeks) and learned how to improve the air quality inside his home and especially to create a “retreat”, somewhere he could go and know the air was as pure as he could possibly make it. Although he made a few mistakes on the way, moving house twice, this was part of the learning experience.

He soon found that not only the building materials used in modern homes but also the furniture and particularly soft furnishings were amongst the worst contributors to his symptoms. He struck lucky finding an old un-renovated home in South Gippsland, away from a closely populated area and at the end of a no through road, with no passing traffic. This is where his past life and skills as a builder/renovator came in and with an increasing number of “feel a bit better today” days he was able to renovate his old country cottage, using only organic and healthy materials with particular emphasis on an organic cotton bedroom.

As a chemical sensitivity or asthma sufferer, it is vital to get your rest without the effects of chemicals. Avoiding the traditional bedding products including sheets, pillows and bed linen (which are often treated with potentially allergy causing chemicals), is really important in helping you FEEL BETTER. Problems such as Eczema, ADD (attention deficit disorder), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), Gulf War Syndrome, Environmental Illness (EI), Sick Building Syndrome, Fybromyalgia, Depression and Anxiety can all be significantly relieved, by reducing exposure to chemicals. The result has meant that using the expertise from many years in the bedding and textile industry, Peter was able to begin the new and successful venture, creating and producing “Organature” Organic Cotton bedding and bedlinen from home. Sleeping in a healthy bedroom is the BEST way for the body to recuperate after exposure to chemicals in normal daily life. While it is important to recognise that so far there is no “cure” for MCS, learning what it is and avoiding harmful chemical substances CAN make a world of difference.

Spare a thought also for the partners and family of the chemically affected person. The necessary lifestyle changes affect them also and it takes a great deal of patience and understanding to help the person you most care about on the road to recovery. READ: Peter’s Story – An article in Garden Organic.

Why Organature Make Organic Products

When one of our founders, (Peter), was diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity he was forced to give up work. To minimise exposure to the harmful chemicals that were making Peter so sick we use “only” Organic products in our home, with an extra special emphasis on what we sleep on and under. We saw a significant improvement in Peter’s health, due to these changes.

As there was no Bedding Manufacturer using clean and safe Organic practices in Australia, we formed Organature and began the process ourselves. There are many thousands of Australians who have similar symptoms to that which Peter was suffering, we believe these symptoms and many other allergies are caused by reactions to chemicals found in the conventional products most householders would currently buy or own. We now make, import (where necessary) and supply the range of Organic Cotton goods that many people were desperately needing to regain their health.

Only Safe Organic Products and Packaging Are Used

All Organature bed linen and other bedding products are made in Australia in our own sewing rooms under strict clean conditions. Our requirements to supply HEALTHY PRODUCTS to the public which are NOT contaminated by outgassing from other products and are more strict than organic certification requirements.

Our manufacturing area, sewing room and showroom walls are painted with natural organic paint, the suspended ceiling is hardwood frame with organic cotton calico, and the cutting table is Australian hardwood. (We DO NOT use chipboard or MDF). We are predominantly a family business and none of us use synthetic fragrances from perfumes, deodorants, aftershave to hand creams, personal care products etc. We follow the European Organic certification standard which is more stringent and health promoting. We don’t use the American standard because it allows certain chemicals to be used in fabrics, like OB fabric whiteners, which are not allowed in Europe.

We control all aspects of the fabric supply and import, the products we manufacture ourselves and those we have made especially for us under strictly controlled contract, without contamination from outside sources. Our mattresses, doonas, quilt covers and pillows are filled with clean Certified Organic Cotton and comply with very strict organic specifications. About Our Eco-Friendly Packaging Materials

An Organature innerspring mattress or futon mattress is first packed in a handy draw string bag made especially from our organic cotton bag and then meticulously wrapped in one layer of thick plastic and finally in a carton for outside Melbourne and interstate transport. This gives extra protection between the mattresses and the outer wrapping. All of our other bedding and bedlinen products are packed in either an organic cotton fabric or true cellulose film and mostly in a carton for transport. We care that you receive your new mattress, bedding, futon, sheets, pillows, towels, clothes or any other organic products we sell, in the best possible condition.

About Our Organic Business

From inception our aim was to assist with the understanding and education of Certified Organic Cotton and the health benefits which can be achieved by using mattresses, bedding, bedlinen and garments made from Certified Organic Cotton. Health benefits may also be achieved when using our Australian manufactured hardwood products. This Australian hardwood timber has been kiln dried so off-gassing of the volatile oil (eucalypt) has been minimised. Pine on the other hand, being a soft wood, out-gasses volatile terpines. One of the major benefits of our local product is that it IS LOCAL, thus avoiding the fumigation requirements of products imported into Australia.

What Does Certified Organic Really Mean?

Certified Organic bedding and textiles are not always understood. There is a lot of misleading advertising, claims that products are natural and organic when they are clearly not, and certainly not Certified Organic. Certified means that you are purchasing products which do not contain harmful chemicals. The raw product and any further processing is without harmful chemicals. It also means that an independent company makes regular inspections from farmer to production, and will issue certificates which are the assurance of the certification.

We ONLY work with Certified Organic Fabrics, Materials and Fillings, not just because we need to for our own health and quality of life, but because many of our customers have been caught out buying products (especially mattresses), that exacerbated various symptoms and made them feel ill. We have witnessed a dramatic increase in misleading advertising and false claims by retailers in Australia recently. Do You Have Some Questions?

We pride ourselves that with our many years of experience of bedding and bedlinen in the conventional market and the consequent MCS injury sustained by Peter caused by out-gassing of the chemicals in the non-organic products, also with our subsequent years of experience with Certified Organic Bedding and Certified Organic Bedding and Bed Linen, many come to us not just for products but first with questions and advice.

Please do not hesitate to ask questions either by email or phone. Most times phone is easier and better as that way we can be more detailed and informative. Many times answers to questions lead to more questions. Our experienced staff are always happy to help, in any way they can.
